Strathardle Highland Gathering and Show

Strathardle Highland Gathering and ShowThe Gathering will next take place on Saturday 23rd August 2008.

On Friday 4th August 1871 the first ever Strathardle Highland Gathering was held on the edge of Kirkmichael and we are still going strong! The Gathering is held each year on the 4th Saturday in August at the Bannerfield in Kirkmichael and it includes many of the events such as “Playing Marches on a Highland Bagpipe” and “Tossing the Caber” from the original Games.

It still retains much of the atmosphere of earlier games. Participation in the running races, pillow fights and tilt the bucket add to the enjoyment of the day. The Gathering has been enhanced by the addition of the Agricultural Show, reckoned to be one of the best showing of stock in Scotland. Our Home Industries tent attracts hundreds of craft entries, including many from children, from across the community. We also have a thriving Highland Dance Competition.

Home Industries entry forms are available from the Kirkmichael Village Shop. Agricultural entries should be made to Jean Lindsay 01250 885233. Piping, fancy dress and heavyweight entries are on the field on the day at the Secretary’s hut.

Admission is now just £4 for an adult, £2 for under 16s and OAPs or a family ticket (2+2) for just £10.

For further information contact David Houstoun on 01250 882241.
